Dr. Arun Agrawal, Secretary General, WASME attended the General Assembly of the International Association for Crafts, Small and Medium-Sized enterprises (IACME) at Warsaw on 15 May 2001. 680 delegates from over 40 countries attended the Assembly, apart from representatives from the World Bank, UNIDO, ILO and several other International Organisations. In his welcome address, Dr. Agrawal gave a brief overview of WASME’s history, current relationships, and future endeavours.

Dr. Agrawal proposed to the Management of IACME to host their congress in New Delhi on 13 November 2004 which will mark the 25th Anniversary of WASME in the setting up of which IACME played a supporting role. This in turn would also help IACME come closer to the SME Community in Africa and Asia where WASME is very strong.

Dr. Arun Agrawal represented WASME at the 4th ASME Woman Entrepreneur of the year Award Ceremony, held at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore on 22 November 2001. 600 distinguished guests, government officials, ambassadors, CEOs, and senior executives were present.
  1. Sri Lanka


Dr. Arun Agrawal, Secretary General, visited Sri Lanka on 27-28 June 2002.

During the course of his discussions with Ministers and high ranking officials, the Secretary General assured them of WASME's interest in extending support for technological upgradation of crafts and small scale industries sector in Sri Lanka and providing information on best practices followed in different national economies for development of small and medium-sized enterprises. He invited them to participate in the World Convention on Small and Medium Enterprises scheduled to take place in Changzhou, China during 19-21 September 2002 and to encourage participation of Sri Lankan entrepreneurs in the China International SME Commodities Fair taking place at the same time. The possibility of holding a building materials technological exposition in Sri Lanka, with the support of the Building Materials Technology Promotion Council of India and UNIDO, was also discussed.

  1. Strengthening of relations with UN agencies 28-30th May 2001


During his participation in the World Investment Report 2001 (WIR01) Workshop, held in Geneva on 28-29 May 2001, Dr. Arun Agrawal availed the opportunity of calling on UN agencies to strengthen relations with them.

International Labour Organisation



Dr. Arun Agrawal held discussions with Mr. Michael Henriques, Director, Job Creation and Enterprise Development, Ms. Christine Evans-Klock, Director, Infocus Programme on Boosting Employment through Small Enterprises Development. These discussions centred around WASME’s association with various enterprise development related programmes and projects of ILO. It was suggested that WASME should make a formal application to the Director General of ILO for grant of consultative status with ILO.

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development



During a meeting with Ms. Lorraine Ruffing, Chief Ms. Fulvia Farinelli and Ms. Kumika Powell from Enterprise Development Branch of UNCTAD, Dr. Arun Agrawal discussed the structure of the global interaction on enhancing linkages between MNCs and SMEs.

World Intellectual Property Organisation



Mr. Guriqbal Singh Jaiya, Deputy Director, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Division, apprised Dr. Agrawal of the proposed programmes of the newly set up SME Division in WIPO and sought WASME’s active support in promoting the utilisation of Intellectual Property Rights by SMEs.
  1. WASME Secretary General calls on the Executive Secretary of UNECE


The Secretary General of WASME called on the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Mrs Brigita Schmognerova during his visit to Geneva on 1-2 May 2002. The Executive Secretary expressed her strong support for the development of the SME sector, especially in the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe. During the meeting, she invited WASME to participate in the SME week being celebrated by UNECE in Geneva, and also sent a message to the 13th International Conference on SME’s held in Gibraltar during 7-10 April 2002.
  1. Reinforcing WASME’s relationships with UN organisations


The Secretary General of WASME traveled to Geneva during 14-19 November 2002 for inviting senior officials of various UN agencies to participate in the 14th International Conference on Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (14th ICSME) scheduled to be held in Tel Aviv, Israel during 7-10 April 2003. The visit enabled him to establish contacts with two major organisations, World Trade Organisation (WTO) and International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Mr Raul Uranga, newly appointed Permanent Representative of WASME in Geneva, accompanied Dr Agrawal to these meetings. Apart from the invitations to the 14th ICSME, the following issues were discussed.

Ms. Ruffing suggested that WASME might consider working with ITU in the field of e-commerce and usage of information and communication technologies by SMEs.
