Are You Raising The Next Lindsey Lohan?

Are You Raising The Next Lindsey Lohan?

2/16/2011

Many of us that have raised or are raising children know that most of the time it is rewarding but at other times can be trying. We know that we must give our children lots of love but we must also give them lots of discipline if we want them to grow up to be the kind of adult that we strive for them to be.

We all know that there are some parents out there that never discipline their children for various reasons, usually something along the lines of wanting to be a friend to their children or they want them to have a better childhood then their parents. Well, here’s a news flash. Those parents who want to be their children’s friend instead of parents have children who grow up to be adults that are either in trouble all the time or do not know how to survive on their own when they become adults. The ones who want to do not discipline their children because they want them to have a better childhood than their parents are actually giving them a childhood much worse than the one their parents grew up in.

Children are learning “sponges” that pick everything they see, hear, touch and smell and file it away in that file cabinet called the brain. As they grow and get older, they learn to interpret all the information that is in that file cabinet. Many of the minor items will be of no consequence but the larger ones will shape their lives long after they are grown and away from their parents.

Those children that live in what I call the “next time” world are the ones who have the most trouble growing into well-disciplined adults. The “next time” world as you can imagine is the life of growing up and doing something known to be wrong only to be told that “next time” they will get in trouble. These children quickly catch on that “next time” never comes and so they continue to commit acts that they know are wrong in order to try to force some discipline out of their parents.

To those parents that are raising their children in the “next time” world, I would like to pose a question that hopefully put this philosophy of child rearing in to a little broader perspective. That question is “do you realize that you could be raising the next Lindsey Lohan”. Just think, someday, YOUR son or daughter could be spread all over the news and tabloids for being in and out of jail, prison, rehab facilities, court and all kinds of other trouble. Won’t you be so proud to see your kid on the evening news in handcuffs being paraded into court in an orange jumpsuit?

While I am sure that Lindsey Lohan’s problems started with her childhood, I am also equally appalled by the actions of the Judge who has become the father figure in her life. When Judges are dealing with children or young adults that have not learned (or been taught) to be adults yet, they must also be aware that they quickly become a parental figure in this person’s life.

At twenty years of age, Lohan had already acquired a serious alcohol and drug problem and entered into her first rehab facility in January of 2007. Five months later, she was arrested for drunk driving and this one charge was the beginning of her court career (a career that she may retire from). She entered rehab for the second time for forty-five days.

Two weeks out of rehab, she was arrested after trying to run down a woman with her car. She was charges with possession of cocaine, drunk driving with a suspended license. In order to avoid jail time,

she entered rehab for the third time in nine months. In August 2007, Lohan was sentenced to 1 day in jail and actually served only eighty-four minutes

(next time).

In March 2009 a warrant for her arrest was issued but later dropped by the Judge

(next time)

. In October 2009, the Judge extended her probation for an additional year because Lohan had not completed the required terms of her probation

(next time)

. In May 2010, Lohan missed a required court appearance because she lost her passport and was unable to fly back from France. (Don’t cry to hard). The Judge issued an arrest warrant but later withdrew the warrant after her family posted a one hundred thousand dollar bond

(next time)

. At a re-scheduled hearing four days later, a “stern faced” Judge ordered Lohan to be fitted with a bracelet to detect alcohol, banned drinking and order her to weekly drug testing.

A scant 42 days later, Lohan was back in court being sentenced to ninety days in jail and ninety days to follow in rehab for not following the terms of her probation. After serving eleven days in jail and twenty-three days in rehab (that’s a total of thirty-four days of a one hundred eighty day sentence) she was released back onto the streets to create more havoc

.

In September 2010 she failed a drug test and again was handcuffed and driven to jail where she was released later that night

(next time)

. Four days later she was admitted into the Betty Ford Clinic where the Judge ordered her to stay until January third and also advised her that if she failed a drug test or violated her probation before her next court date (February twenty-fifth, 2011) she would be sent to jail for one hundred eighty days. In December, Lohan attacked a Betty Ford employee who was fired for reporting the incident. (Apparently she did not have the same Judge looking over her). As for Lohan’s punishment, nothing, not even an appearance before the Judge

.

That brings us up to January 2011, when Lohan stole and was caught red-handed with a twenty-five hundred dollar necklace. She was charged with felony grand theft and faces three and one half years in prison. Let’s see, I believe that translates to seventy-seven days which after time off for good behavior is thirty-eight days, and then allowing for jail over-crowding will cut that to nineteen days and then time off because the judge has pity on her

(next time)

takes it down to eight days and then just because she is famous and has money and has never been told no should cut it down to about three hours.

The moral of this long treacherous life of Lindsey Lohan is that because she has money we all know she will never serve the kind of time that any person her age would serve in similar circumstances without her money. However, this all starts at home with the parents raising their children. Your kids need to hear you say no and stick to it on a regular basis. They need to be taught what is right and what is wrong and that there is punishment for doing wrong

They probably think Lindsey Lohan is great and a good role model but if you do not train them right they will end up just like her. The only difference will be that they will go to jail and STAY there unless they can find a way to come up with her fame and especially her money.

Children are wonderful, let’s keep them that way. Say no, not
